How Bowen Therapy Works

Bowen bodywork is a specific series of muscles and connective tissue movements designed to treat a wide variety of problems and injuries. It primarily works on the nervous system addressing every system in the body, internal organ systems as well as the musculoskeletal structure. These gentle, powerful moves send neurological impulses to the brain, which then is given time to process and feed impulses back to realign and balance the body. The brain recognizes these sequential moves as a reset for the body to correct neurological patterns and pathways that either have been offset by physical trauma, negative emotions, or thought patterns.

Your Bowen Therapy Session

Bowen is such a gentle and relaxing therapy that often clients fall asleep during a session. The procedure consists of precise, gentle moves on specific tendons or muscles signaling the brain and body to begin or continue healing. Resting quietly between sets of movements, gives your system time to incorporate the new information.
Deep relaxation and subtle sensations may occur as you release energy blockages. Some changes may be immediate or more likely you will notice changes over the following days or weeks. Results depend on the body’s ability to heal itself.

More about the Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique was developed in Australia by the late Thomas Ambrose Bowen. The technique is gentle and noninvasive, and can be performed through clothing. Misalignments commonly right themselves yet there is no manipulation of joints or bones as in chiropractic. Muscle tensions and strains can be relieved and normal lymphatic flows restored — yet muscles are not squeezed as in massage. Meridians usually show immediate improvements yet the work is not based on meridians. Fascia re-hydrates, adhesion release and scar tissue softens in most cases yet there is no heavy pressure as in Rolfing or deep tissue work. Internal psychological shifts are common yet it is not necessary to evoke emotional response as in mind-body therapies. Nearly everyone reports a pleasant, relaxed state, and a deep sense of well being and ease.
